Located in equatorial South America, French Guiana is an overseas department of France. It consists of three geographical regions: the coastal belt, where the majority of the population lives, the rainforest and the Tumac-Humac Mountains, which are located near the border with Brazil.

Cayenne is one of the most pleasant capitals of South America. It has a relaxed tropical ambience, French colonial architecture, local museums and is the main market of the country. Popularity among tourists enjoys the Place de Grenoble, located in the western part of the capital. The peculiarity of this area of the city lies in the fact that there are all the main attractions of the city.
In the central part of the city of Cayenne, not far from the fish market, there is the Lusso Canal - the city's main waterway. Construction began in 1777. It was captured by hand by Guyana's captives for four years. The canal, built by architect Sirdeya, is a favorite holiday destination for both residents and visitors of the city.
The growth and activity of the Kourou region is based on the European space program which is concentrated there. Since 1970, the population of this area has grown from 600 inhabitants to today's 22,000 inhabitants.
Iles du Salut or Salvation Islands are 15km north of the Kourou region. In the 18th century, the islands became prison housing over 2,000 prisoners, many of whom died from the inhumane conditions in which they were held. The prison was closed in 1946 and the islands became a peaceful natural pleasure again - albeit with a dark past. Iles du Salut consists of three islands: Ile Roiale, Ile St Joseph and Ile du Diable.
Expect a wet road from January to June, with the most precipitation in May. The dry season, which lasts from July to December, can be the most pleasant time to visit. French Guiana has a warm and humid climate all year round, with an average temperature of 28C.
